My name is Charlotte Jones Sievers, I was born in Sweden and have lived on the Costa del Sol for more than 20 years. During that time, I’ve built my life here, raised a family, and seen the area develop into one of Europe’s most desirable destinations.
Being a Swedish native and a fluent speaker of English and Spanish, I can bridge the gap for Scandinavian buyers who want a helpful, trustworthy and professional connection in Spain.

Healthcare here is excellent, the cost of living noticeably lower than in Northern Europe, and the region feels safe and welcoming. The international community makes it easy to feel at home, with outstanding schools for children and endless fine dining options, from beachside tapas to Michelin-starred experiences. For me, it’s the perfect balance of comfort, opportunity, and lifestyle.

Always sunshine
After over twenty years on the Costa del Sol, I still can’t get enough of the warm and sunny climate. With over 320 days of sunshine a year, for me the general quality of life is so much enhanced. To wake up to a blue sky almost every day and be able to have your morning coffee outside is such an unbeatable privilege. And not to mention the constant brightness that lifts your mood and makes outdoor living the norm – from barbecues and beach walks to being able to practice your favourite sport all year round without being compromised by the weather.

Over the years, the Costa del Sol has been more than just my home – it’s been a way of life. Mornings start with coffee on my sunny terrace, followed by a stroll along the beach where the Mediterranean feels like a daily companion. Life here is about balance: fresh seafood at a chiringuito, a round of golf with friends, or a relaxed afternoon exploring whitewashed villages. The pace is slower, yet vibrant – festivals, tapas nights, and long summers keep it lively. What I love most is the endless sunshine, making every day feel like a holiday.

Easy accessibility
It is very easy to stay connected between Scandinavia and the Costa del Sol. Direct flights from Stockholm, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo, and even Bergen bring you straight into Málaga in just 3 - 4 hours making weekend escapes or longer stays simple. Airlines like SAS, Norwegian, and Ryanair keep routes frequent year-round, with even more options in the summer. For me, this accessibility has been a game changer – friends and family can visit often, and traveling north for business or holidays is never complicated. Living here, you enjoy sunshine without losing touch with home.

Excellent healthcare
Spain’s healthcare is one of the biggest advantages of living here. The public system is modern, efficient, and largely free if you’re a resident, with hospitals and clinics offering excellent care. Many locals also choose private health insurance, which is affordable compared to Northern Europe and gives quick access to specialists. I’ve always felt secure knowing high-quality medical help is nearby, whether for routine check-ups or emergencies. Combine that with the Mediterranean lifestyle and healthy diet, and it’s easy to see why people here enjoy such long, active lives.

Lower costs of living
Living on the Costa del Sol has shown me how much further your money goes here compared to Northern Europe. Housing, dining out, and daily expenses are noticeably lower, yet the quality of life is higher. A relaxed lunch with wine at a beachside chiringuito often costs less than a quick meal back home. Utility bills and services are affordable, and fresh produce at local markets is both cheap and excellent in quality. After two decades on the Costa del Sol, I’ve always appreciated how safe life feels here. The atmosphere is relaxed, and crime rates are low compared to many European cities. Police presence is visible but not intrusive, adding to the sense of security. Of course, like anywhere, you need common sense, but overall the region offers a calm, secure environment. For me, safety has been one of the key reasons this place feels like home – a community where you can truly relax.

International schools
My son grew up on the Costa del Sol and had the privilege of attending international schools here. From the start, he was surrounded by classmates from all over the world, which gave him not only a strong education but also a truly global outlook. The schools offered bilingual programs, excellent teachers, and plenty of extracurricular activities, from sports to music. He graduated fluent in several languages and with friends across continents. For us as parents, it was reassuring to know he was getting a high-quality education while still enjoying the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle that makes this region so special.

Fine dining
From the beginning of living on the Costa del Sol, I’ve come to love the incredible dining scene here. From traditional tapas bars in hidden alleys to Michelin-starred restaurants overlooking the sea, food is an essential part of life. Fresh seafood, local wines, and Mediterranean flavors dominate, but you’ll also find world-class international cuisine thanks to the region’s cosmopolitan mix. For me, fine dining here combines quality and atmosphere in a way that’s hard to match, making every meal feel like a celebration.

Buying property in Spain involves several taxes and costs. The main tax is the Property Transfer Tax (ITP) for resale properties, which varies by region but typically ranges from 7% to 10% of the purchase price. For new-builds, you pay VAT (IVA) at 10% plus Stamp Duty (AJD) at 0.5% to 1.5%.
Beyond these, expect notary fees, property registry fees, and legal fees for conveyancing, which together can add another 1-2% to the total cost. Mortgage arrangement fees might also apply if you're financing. It's crucial to budget for these additional expenses when considering a purchase to ensure a smooth and financially sound transaction. Meet Charlotte – Your Representative in Spain
Let me answer all your questions.
Born in Helsingborg, I had a very good upbringing, but from my early teens, a dream of an international lifestyle guided my every step. This led to German studies in Munich, followed by an exciting year in the US, working as an au-pair in Malibu Beach, a season in Aspen, and a summer in NYC.
After four years of language and business studies at Lund University, I secured a trainee position with a multinational company. This landed me a transfer to London, where I lived for almost 15 years and met my British husband. In 2002, our shared desire for a new adventure and better climate brought us to Costa del Sol with our four-year-old son.
Already a digital nomad, I continued running the translation business I had started in London. We first lived in Mijas Costa where we bought our first property. Our next move was to Nueva Andalucia, Marbella, where my son enrolled at Aloha College. Once my son flew the nest, I chose to go inland to Monda, a beautiful Spanish village just 30 minutes from Marbella. For me, it truly offers the best of two worlds.
